The Japan Rail Pass is no longer the automatic purchase it once was. Its price rose by roughly 70 percent in October 2023, and it rose again on 1 October 2026. For a simple Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka loop, separate tickets usually cost less.
Even so, the pass still rewards travelers who cover long distances across several regions in a short window. Routes that reach Hiroshima, Kanazawa or the north are where it earns its price. That is why the calculator sits at the top of this page.
These are the official nationwide prices in yen. Children aged 6 to 11 pay about half, and children under 6 travel at no charge when they do not occupy a reserved seat.
| Pass | Ordinary | Green Car |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥53,000 | ¥74,000 |
| 14 days | ¥84,000 | ¥116,000 |
| 21 days | ¥105,000 | ¥147,000 |
Adult prices; earlier prices struck through. For a limited time, the official Japan Rail Pass website still sells at the earlier prices; no end date has been announced.
The pass covers almost every Japan Railways train: the Shinkansen, limited express, rapid and local services. It also covers select JR buses, the Miyajima ferry and airport links such as the Narita Express. It runs for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, in Ordinary or Green Car class.
Two gaps matter. First, the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen need a paid supplement; the Hikari and Sakura run the same routes only 15 to 20 minutes slower, with none. Second, city subways and most private railways sit outside the pass, so carry an IC card such as Suica or ICOCA.
If your trip stays in one area, a regional pass usually wins. The Kansai Area Pass covers Osaka, Kyoto and Nara at a low daily rate. The Tokyo Wide Pass reaches Nikko, Kamakura and the Mt. Fuji area over three days. Meanwhile, the Hokuriku Arch Pass links Tokyo, Kanazawa and Kyoto over seven. The calculator suggests these automatically, and we order them the same way.
A few characters go a long way on station boards and menus.
Ninety days, one Japanese idea, one page a day. Each is $27, in paperback or digital.
A compact power bank, a plug adapter for Japanese sockets, and packing organizers for a carry-on that moves between hotels.
What to settle before your first trip, in the order it matters: documents, money, transport, then the first days.
Thank you. The First-Timer’s Japan Checklist is on its way.
It depends on your route. For trips crossing several regions with three or more long journeys, the pass usually saves money. For shorter loops, separate tickets or a regional pass cost less. The calculator gives a clear answer for your itinerary.
About 5 to 6 percent. A 7-day Ordinary pass went from ¥50,000 to ¥53,000. For a limited time, the official Japan Rail Pass website still sells at the earlier prices.
Yes, with a paid supplement. Most travelers take the Hikari or Sakura instead: the same route, roughly 15 minutes slower, with no supplement.

Often, yes. They cost less and break even sooner. If your trip stays within one region, a regional pass almost always saves more, and we order it the same way.
