The Studio

Practices for the quiet side of Japan.

Six small tools for cultural practice — calligraphy, kanji, naming, an anime quiz, the cherry blossom, and the question of life in Japan. Use one once, or return to one often. The work compounds quietly.

On Practice

A Studio, not an Arcade

Practice, in Japanese culture, is its own kind of arrival. Calligraphy is not a thing you finish. A name is not a thing you settle. The cherry blossom is not a thing you keep.

What you do quietly, attentively, and again and again becomes its own way of being in the world. The Studio is for that.

Common Questions

Questions Worth Asking

Do I need to register to use these tools?

No. Open any tool and begin. The Letters newsletter is optional, and only collects an email address if you choose to subscribe.

Are the tools mobile-friendly?

The kanji flashcards and name generator work well on a phone. Calligraphy Practice and the Residency Assessment are best on a tablet or desktop, where there is room to write and to consider.

Can I save my progress?

Within a session, yes. For ongoing practice, return often — daily even. The work compounds quietly, and a session a day for thirty days will move you further than five hours on a single weekend.

Where should I begin if I am new to Japan?

Two natural quick entrances. The Japanese Name Generator returns a kanji name in seconds. The Anime in Japan quiz takes about a minute and surfaces a curated recommendation. From either, Daily Kanji or Calligraphy Practice are natural next steps. The Residency Assessment is for travellers thinking about a longer stay.
