First, the practice space — then the workbook deepens what you build there.

The Magnificent Japan Calligraphy Practice page is online. Specifically, it covers every kanji in the JLPT N5 list. Furthermore, animated stroke demonstrations teach the order. Meanwhile, the brush simulation gives the feel of shodō without the ink. Above all, the workbooks pair with the practice page — not against it. In essence, the practice page builds recognition. Meanwhile, the workbook builds muscle memory.

Practice on screen until the strokes feel natural. Then move to paper. Specifically, twenty minutes online plus twenty minutes with the workbook beats an hour of either alone. Above all, the screen builds your eye. Meanwhile, the paper builds your hand.

— The First Volume

One hundred kanji. Two thousand eight hundred practice boxes. One workbook.

Volume 1 covers every kanji in the JLPT N5 list. Characters appear by frequency of use, not by mnemonic sequence. Furthermore, every character builds across a multi-row grid with progressive stroke teaching. In addition, each one pairs with two vocabulary compounds. The compounds include on’yomi and kun’yomi readings plus an English meaning. Meanwhile, the eight and a half by eleven edition gives twenty-eight practice boxes per character. The six by nine edition gives eighteen.

What is progressive stroke kanji teaching?

Progressive stroke teaching shows a kanji character as it builds. First, stroke one appears in colour. Then stroke two appears, with stroke one shown in grey behind it. Next comes stroke three, with strokes one and two in grey. Finally, the last stroke joins to complete the character. In essence, this teaches calligraphy as a sequence rather than a finished shape. As a result, the character emerges through the practice — the way a teacher would on the board.

Every Magnificent Japan calligraphy practice workbook uses this pedagogy. As far as we have seen in the field, no other workbook teaches this way. Indeed, the grey-to-colour build mirrors how a calligraphy teacher actually works at the desk.

— The Calligraphy Workbook Series

The calligraphy practice workbook series — from first kanji to brush capstone.

A learner moving from JLPT N5 to N4 to brush calligraphy is on a multi-year path. A single workbook cannot serve that path. Therefore, every volume in the calligraphy practice workbook series picks up where the last left off. Meanwhile, the Kana Workbook runs parallel for absolute beginners.

About the calligraphy practice workbook series

What is progressive stroke kanji teaching?
Progressive stroke teaching shows a kanji character as it builds. First, stroke one appears in colour. Then stroke two appears, with stroke one shown in grey behind it. Furthermore, every later stroke joins the previous strokes shown in grey. In essence, this teaches calligraphy as a sequence rather than a finished shape.
When will Volume 1 publish?
Volume 1 — 100 Essential JLPT N5 Kanji — is in final production. Furthermore, you can sign up for the launch list above to be told the day it goes live.
Are these print, digital, or both?
Each workbook publishes as a print edition in two trim sizes. Specifically, six by nine for portability, and eight and a half by eleven for home study with larger boxes. Furthermore, every workbook also publishes as a digital edition. The digital editions are formatted for iPad with Apple Pencil through GoodNotes or Notability.
What is the difference between calligraphy, kanji, and kana?
Kana are the two phonetic alphabets of Japanese, hiragana and katakana. Meanwhile, kanji are the logographic characters borrowed from Chinese. Furthermore, calligraphy, or shodō, is the art of writing them with brush and ink. In essence, the Magnificent Japan series teaches all three as a single practice.

Editions, access, and the practice page

Will there be a Kindle version?
No. A workbook is for writing in. Furthermore, a Kindle edition would not allow that, so it is not part of the series. Instead, the digital editions are PDF, designed for tablet apps that accept stylus input.
Why a series rather than a single book?
A learner moving from JLPT N5 to N4 to brush calligraphy is on a multi-year path. Furthermore, a single workbook cannot serve that path. Therefore, the series is structured so each volume picks up where the last left off.
Can I use the Calligraphy Practice page without buying a workbook?
Yes. The Calligraphy Practice page requires no signup. Specifically, it covers all one hundred JLPT N5 kanji with animated stroke order and a brush simulation. Furthermore, the workbooks deepen the practice. They do not gate it.
How will I be told when each title goes live?
Sign up for the launch list above and select the volumes you want to be told about. Furthermore, you will hear from Magnificent Japan only when there is a release. No churn.
